Institute Presentation

Founded in 1949 the University of Ibadan is the oldest University in Nigeria.  The College of Medicine is the physical home to the Department of Psychiatry. The College is noted for its excellence in public health education, cutting-edge research, and service to local, national, and international communities.  The Department of Psychiatry, a  WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, Neurosciences, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, is one of the foremost academic centres of psychiatry in Africa with a long history of innovative research in diverse areas, including the evaluation of population level mental health indices and cross-cultural studies of psychopathology and of access to service. The Department has been a site for some of the important landmark epidemiological studies in psychiatry; including the International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia, the 10-nation Outcome Study, the Psychological Problem in General Health Care, the Ibadan-Indianapolis Dementia Project, and lately, the World Mental Health Survey Initiative. It is currently implementing a project, Mental Health Leadership and Advocacy Programme, designed to build capacity and expertise for the strengthening of mental health systems in five Anglophone West African countries. The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate training in psychiatry and neurosciences, including an MSc in psychiatry and a range of short-term courses in mental health leadership, research and survey methodology, and health system research.
