Institute Presentation

Established in 1955, Butabika National Hospital (BNH) is the only National Referral Mental Health Institution in the country. The Hospital provides expert management for patients with mental, neurological and substance use disorders. At the same time, BNH is the second major teaching hospital in Uganda receiving students from

Makerere University College of Health Sciences and other higher training institutions for health workers across the country. The hospital complex houses training facilities for 2 schools; school of Psychiatric Nursing and a school for Psychiatric Clinical Officers. The hospital also provides outpatient services to the people from the surrounding area in both general health (PHC) as well as specialized mental health needs, providing a case in point for integration of mental health services. The hospital mission is “To offer Super Specialized and General

Mental Health Services, conduct health training, health related research and to provide support to health care services in the country”. The hospital has a bed capacity of 500 psychiatric beds, approximately 430 staff and an annual budget of approximately USD2.25 million. The hospital has a functional Research and Planning Unit to undertake and support mental health related research as one of the core principles. Over the past 10 years, the hospital has had collaborative linkage with Tropical Health Education Trust (THET) and East London NHS foundation trust in the area of capacity building, facilitating exchange programme and Commonwealth fellowships for Ugandan mental health professionals. It has also participated in many international collaborative (multi-centre) research projects such as Mental Health and Poverty Project (MHaPP).
